TRIPLE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES

Did you know that reefs are masses of rock that are in shallow water near the beach. Some reefs can rise up above the water. The most common type of reef is made of coral. Coral reefs are formed in warm tropical and sub-tropical waters that are clear and unpolluted. They are built by tiny animals called polyps. Each casing is built on top of the casing of another polyp and this is how the reef grows.

There are three main types of reefs: fringing, barrier, and atolls. Fringing reefs grow close to the shore with only a narrow lagoon of water behind them. The reefs in the Caribbean Sea are mostly of this type. Barrier reefs grow at much greater distance from the shore, leaving  wide lagoons of sheltered water. The biggest and best known of these is the Great Barrier Reef off the east coast of Australia, which is almost 1,243 miles long. Atolls are circular reefs surrounding a shallow lagoon.

Dolphins are amazing! They’re one of my favorite animals. Did you know that dolphins are highly intelligent marine mammals and are part of the family of toothed whales that includes orcas and pilot whales? They are found world wide mostly in shallow seas of the continental shelves, and are carnivores, mostly eating fish and squid. Dolphins colors varies, but they are usually gray with darker backs than the rest of their bodies. There are 43 different species of dolphins. 38 of them are marine dolphins which most of us think of when we think of dolphins. 5 of them are river dolphins, which I had never heard of before. The most common type is a bottlenose dolphin.  I love dolphins they’re my 2nd favorite animal. What is your favorite animal?

Seals are amazing! My favorite seal is a fur seal. What is your favorite seal? There are many types of seals like the elephant seal, fur seal, harp seal, leopard seal, and many kinds of of sea lions. Did you know that sea lions are called eared seals because their ears stick out from their heads. Most other seals are called earless seals because their ears are not as visible. Elephant seals are the largest type of seal, growing up to 19 feet. They have ivory tusks like elephants. Seals are my 2nd favorite animal after elephants. What is your favorite animal?

One of my favorite games is Monopoly. Did you know that the earliest version of monopoly was called The Landlord’s Game? A landlord is someone who owns a building or a property and charges to rent it out to others. It was designed by an American named Elizabeth Magie. Magie originally meant for the game to show the economic results of rent, land taxes, and whether you have a lot of money or a little. I love Monopoly, but I don’t get to play it much because my family is very busy and the game takes a long time to play completely. My favorite is a newer version that has a cat playing piece. Do you like Monopoly? If you do, what is your favorite playing piece? If not, what is your favorite game?

Have you ever been to a tulip festival? I have. It is really cool. The first one I went to is in Woodburn, Oregon. It was called the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm. I love tulips. They’re my 5th favorite flower. There are so many tulips there. There are also other activities that you can do. There is food, bouncy houses and other cool stuff. There’s also an area where you can pick flowers. I got a treat called an elephant ear. If you don’t know what that is, it’s like a giant flat cinnamon sugar doughnut. My other favorite flowers are lilies, roses, and hydrangeas. What is your favorite flower?

Avery’s purpose: To convince you that Utah is a better place to live than Oregon.

Jerry’s purpose: To convince you that Oregon is a better place to live than Utah.

Avery says: It doesn’t rain as much there.

Example: You can play out side more in Utah.

Jerry says: Oregon has more diverse topography and variety of activities.

Example: It borders the Pacific Ocean, so you can play at the beach, fish, surf and even go crabbing.

Avery says: It snows more in Utah.

Example: You can go sledding with out having to drive so far away.

Jerry says: Oregon has amazing places to eat. It is a “foodie’s” dream land.

Example: Being so close to the ocean, it has lots of fresh seafood. It has so many restaurants and is also home to many a James Beard award-winning chef.

 Avery: Have I convinced you that Utah is a better place to live in?

Jerry: Well, actually I didn’t need any convincing. But, yes, I love those things about living in Utah too!

Jerry: Have I convinced you that Oregon is a better place to live?

Avery: Yes, you have convinced me.

There are many types of gemstones. I’ll name some: diamonds, opals, emeralds, sapphires and rubies. Diamonds are found in Africa and Australia. I bet you all know that the diamond is the hardest rock in the world. Sapphires and rubies are the second hardest rocks in the word. Sapphires can be blue, green, pink, purple or multiple colors. Diamonds are usually colorless but may be tinged pink or yellow. Emeralds come from the Ural mountains in Russia, from Colombia and from South Africa. The best rubies come from Burma and Thailand. South Australia has some of the best-known opal fields. Rubies are more valuable than sapphires because they are rarer. My birth stone is a diamond.
